Sun House, Galle

Introduction

Perched on a hill in the center of Galle, the Sun House dates to the 1860s when it was the original home of a Scottish spice merchant and his Sri Lankan wife. Over the years, this famous home has gone through several refurbishments retaining its original colonial period architectural features of courtyards and verandahs and sprawling gardens. A final restoration in 2023 has added stylish and contemporary touches to the rooms and living spaces creating a luxurious boutique hotel that is a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city.    

Location

Located in the center of Galle on Upper Dickson Road, the Sun House is about 10 minutes from the Galle Coast and 15 minutes from Galle’s 17th century Dutch Fort. Sun House is easily accessed via the Southern Expressway travelling from the international airport.

Accommodation

The 8 rooms and suites at the Sun House are beautifully decorated giving each a distinct character.  Interiors are light and airy and furnished with an eclectic mix of furniture, books and art that pays homage to the original owners and subsequent custodians of the property.

Dalloway Room (23 sqm):  The Dalloway Room is inspired by all the famous literary personalities that lived in the Sun House over the years. The room is furnished with a King-size four-post bed and opens out to the Mango Garden and views across Galle.  

Tapestry Room (26 sqm):  The Tapestry room is inspired by the spice merchant’s wife who worked on her passion for sewing and fabrics in this part of the house. Tapestries and a mix of eclectic furniture enhance this room which opens out to the Mango Garden and views across Galle.

Eden Room (27 sqm): This spacious room opens out to lush gardens with views across Galle and is furnished with a King-size antique bed, desk, and lounge chairs.

Merchant Room (25 sqm): Located in the original owner’s private office, the Merchant Room is a tribute to his travels. The room opens out to the gardens and swimming pool.

Study Room (25 sqm): This room occupies the merchant’s study area and has a four-poster bed, desk and built in seating. The room opens out to the main courtyard.

Dumas Suite (44 sqm): A tribute to a former custodian of this property, this large Suite has a separate living space and bathroom with twin vanities, bathtub, and rain shower. Opens out to spectacular views of the lower gardens. 

Taprobane Suite (44 sqm):  Developed in 2023, this luxurious suite is a new addition that looks out to the tree canopy of the lower gardens. Interior is furnished with a king-size four-poster bed, built in seating, and has a study and living space.

Galleon Suite (60 sqm): The largest Suite in the house, this was once the master suite of the property and has a bedroom and spacious living areas. Interiors are furnished with a super King-size bed. The ensuite bathroom has an outdoor bathtub. 

Facilities

The Sun House is well known for its sumptuous cuisine prepared with a blend of local spices and fresh produce. Dine at `The Galleon’ located in the original spice stores of the house.  Meals are also served in the main dining room and outdoors in the courtyard. There are several spaces to rest and unwind including the gardens or in the privacy of your own balcony. Take a refreshing dip in the swimming pool or indulge in a rejuvenating massage. There is much to do in and around the Sun House….explore the fascinating Dutch Fort with its ramparts, lighthouse, colonial period churches and cobblestone roadways.  Go on a cycle ride through inland rural villages; or spend your time taking in the sun and surf on the Galle coast.
